Barcelona Airport (BCN)
Airport Overview
Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport, officially known by its full Catalan name Aeroport Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, is an international airport located 15 km (9.3 miles) southwest of the centre of Barcelona, spanning the municipalities of El Prat de Llobregat, Viladecans, and Sant Boi de Llobregat in Catalonia, Spain. The airport was renamed in honour of Josep Tarradellas, the first president of the restored Generalitat de Catalunya after Spain's transition to democracy. Operating 24 hours a day year-round, it is the primary gateway to Catalonia and the wider Spanish Mediterranean coast.
In 2025, Barcelona Airport handled a record 57,483,036 passengers — a 4.4% increase over 2024's previous all-time record of 55,034,955 — cementing its position as the sixth busiest airport in Europe and the second busiest in Spain after Madrid-Barajas. International traffic dominates, with 43,256,689 passengers (75%) flying to and from international destinations. The airport is the primary hub for Vueling (part of IAG's oneworld family) and LEVEL (IAG's long-haul low-cost brand), and serves as a focus city for Air Europa, Iberia, EasyJet, and Ryanair. In 2025, the airport recorded 361,000 aircraft operations and handled 200.7 million kg of cargo.
The airport's history stretches back to 1918, when a new facility at El Prat replaced the original Barcelona aerodrome. Commercial scheduled services began in 1927 with an Iberia flight to Madrid — Iberia's very first route. The airport expanded significantly for the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics, gaining new terminals and infrastructure. The most transformative upgrade came in 2009, when the iconic Terminal 1 (T1), designed by architect Ricardo Bofill, opened — a sweeping, wave-shaped building designed for 55 million annual passengers. Today, the airport spans two main terminal complexes (T1 and T2), three parallel runways, and has received the Skytrax Best Airport in Southern Europe award on multiple occasions.
What makes BCN particularly notable is the sustained tension between its capacity limits and booming demand: 2024 essentially hit the theoretical maximum of 55 million passengers, yet the airport exceeded expectations again in 2025 with 57.5 million. Catalan and Spanish authorities are actively debating an expansion plan that would extend the third runway by 500 metres and add a new terminal to push capacity toward 70 million passengers per year — a plan strongly contested by environmental groups and a majority of Barcelona residents concerned about overtourism and ecosystem damage to the adjacent Llobregat river delta.

Terminals & Gates
Terminal 1 (T1) — The Main Terminal
Terminal 1 is the primary terminal at Barcelona Airport, opened on 16 June 2009. Designed by renowned Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill, the building is a dramatic wave-shaped structure covering approximately 544,000 square metres across seven floors. It was designed with a capacity of 55 million passengers annually and is one of the most architecturally distinctive terminals in Europe. T1 handles the vast majority of scheduled flights — all long-haul, most Schengen, and all non-Schengen international departures.
Terminal 1 Airlines include Vueling, LEVEL, Iberia, Air Europa, British Airways, Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, TAP Air Portugal, Swiss, Austrian, SAS, Finnair, and dozens more full-service and regional carriers. The terminal is the base for IAG's Spanish operations.
Layout: T1 is organised into five boarding areas — A, B, C (Schengen/domestic), and D, E (non-Schengen/international). The Sky Center on Level 1 is the main commercial hub with restaurants, shops, and duty-free. Level 3 houses additional boarding lounges and gate areas. Boarding area C is reserved for the Barcelona–Madrid air bridge ("Puente Aéreo"), historically one of the world's busiest domestic routes.
Lounges in T1:
- Sala VIP Pau Casals — Schengen departures lounge (Level 2, near Gates A/B/C). Open 05:00–23:00. Walk-in fee: €48 adults / €22.20 children. Accepts Priority Pass, LoungeKey, DragonPass. Offers complimentary food, drinks, showers, Wi-Fi, meeting rooms, children's area.
- Sala VIP Joan Miró — Non-Schengen departures lounge (Level 2, near Gate D). Access for business/first class passengers and Priority Pass. International departures only.
- Sala VIP Colomer — Barcelona–Madrid air bridge lounge (airside, Boarding Area C). Access for air shuttle passengers and Priority Pass. Hours: 05:00–last shuttle (~21:30, 07:00 on weekends).
- Premium VIP Lounge / Business Centre — Landside, Level 2. Open 07:00–22:00. Over 1,500 m² with offices, meeting rooms, catering. Day access from €29 with Lounge Pass.

Key facilities in T1: Duty-free (Level 1 Sky Center), luxury brands, multiple restaurants and cafés (Burger King, McDonald's, Dehesa Santamaría, Pret a Manger, Go Natural, La Place), left luggage on Level 0 near arrivals (24 hours), tourist information desk, CaixaBank ATM (Level 1, open 07:30–22:00), Global Exchange currency desk, 14 workstations with 320+ power outlets, medical centre, prayer room, and accessible PRM (Persons with Reduced Mobility) assistance points.
Terminal 2 (T2) — Low-Cost and Regional Terminal
Terminal 2 is the older terminal complex at BCN, comprising three sub-terminals — T2A, T2B, and T2C — which can be walked between. T2 is located 4 km from T1 and is connected via a free 24/7 inter-terminal shuttle bus (journey ~10–15 minutes, departing every 5–7 minutes). T2 also houses the Rodalies commuter train station, making it the rail gateway to the city.
- T2B — Primary low-cost departures terminal. Main user: Ryanair, Transavia, and others. Check-in desks are concentrated here.
- T2C — Used by easyJet and easyJet Switzerland. Gates M for non-Schengen (UK), Gates R for Schengen.
- T2A — Rarely used for passenger departures; adapted for large aircraft (Boeing 777). Occasionally activated for overflow.
T2 Airlines include Ryanair, easyJet, easyJet Switzerland, Transavia, Wizz Air, Volotea, and various charter carriers.
Lounges in T2: The Sala VIP Canudas is located near Gate U in T2. Open 06:00–22:00. Walk-in fee: ~€41.50 adults / ~€19 children. Accessible with Sanctifly membership. Offers Wi-Fi, comfortable seating, tapas, and beverages.
Key facilities in T2: Shops, cafés (Pret a Manger, Slam by Hermanos Torres, Go Natural, Food Market), tourist information, bureau de change, ATM (CaixaBank T2B, Level 0), 5 workstations with power outlets. T2 is more basic than T1 but functional and well-signposted.
Inter-Terminal Transfers
T1 and T2 are not connected airside. The free green inter-terminal shuttle bus departs every 5–7 minutes, 24 hours a day. The journey takes approximately 10–15 minutes. Passengers needing to transfer between terminals must collect their baggage, clear customs, and re-enter security — allow at least 60–90 minutes for self-transfers. The shuttle also connects T2 to the Renfe train station.
---Transportation Guide
Getting from Barcelona Airport to the City
Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport is one of the best-connected airports in Southern Europe. Multiple transport options serve both Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2), with journey times to the city centre ranging from 20 minutes by taxi to approximately 45 minutes by public bus. Note that T1 and T2 are 4 km apart and served by different stops — always verify which terminal your flight departs from or arrives at.
Aerobus (Express Airport Bus)
The Aerobus is the most popular option for tourists and first-time visitors. Two dedicated express bus lines operate:
- A1 — departs from Terminal 1 (T1)
- A2 — departs from Terminals 2B and 2C
Both lines follow the same city route, stopping at Plaça Espanya, Gran Via–Urgell, and Plaça Universitat, before terminating at Plaça de Catalunya — Barcelona's main transport hub. Journey time is approximately 35 minutes. Buses run every 5–10 minutes from 5:00 AM to midnight. 2025 prices: €7.45 one-way, €12.85 return (return valid 90 days). Children under 4 travel free. Tickets can be purchased online, at airport vending machines, or from the driver (exact change appreciated for amounts over €20). On-board Wi-Fi is available.
Train (Rodalies R2 Nord)
The Rodalies R2 Nord commuter train is the cheapest way to reach the city centre and is ideal for passengers staying near Barcelona Sants or Passeig de Gràcia. The station is located at Terminal 2 — T1 passengers must first take the free inter-terminal shuttle to T2. Trains run every 30 minutes, approximately from 5:42 AM to 23:38. Key stops: El Prat de Llobregat (6 min), Barcelona Sants (19 min), Passeig de Gràcia (26 min). 2025 price: €4.90 one-way. The T-Casual 10-trip card (€12.55) is also valid on this service.
Metro (L9 Sud)
The L9 Sud (orange line) connects both T1 and T2 to Barcelona's metro network. Each terminal has its own metro station. The line runs to Zona Universitària (approximately 30–35 minutes from T1), where passengers can transfer to Lines L3 (green) or L5 (blue) to reach the city centre. 2025 price: €5.70 airport ticket (standard metro fare does not cover airport stations). The Hola Barcelona travel card covers airport trips and is valid for 2–5 days of unlimited travel. Note: the L9 does not stop directly in the tourist centre — a transfer is required.
Public Bus (Line 46 / Night Buses)
City bus Line 46 runs from both terminals to Plaça Espanya in the city. It costs approximately €2.55 with a T-Casual card and takes 40–50 minutes. This is the budget option, though luggage space is limited. For night arrivals and early departures, Night Bus N17 operates between the airport and Plaça de Catalunya from approximately 21:55 to 04:50. Night bus single fare: €2.90.
Taxi
Official taxis are Barcelona's iconic black-and-yellow vehicles. Taxi ranks are located directly outside the arrivals hall at both T1 and T2. No reservation is needed; you must take the first taxi in the queue. Typical fare from T1 to city centre: €35–45; from T2: €30–40. Journey time: 20–30 minutes depending on traffic. Additional surcharges apply for night travel (20:00–08:00), weekends, holidays, and airport entry/exit (approximately €3.10 each way). The minimum airport fare is €21. For disability-adapted taxis, call +34 93 420 8088.
Ride-Sharing (Bolt / Cabify / Uber)
Since 2024, the Estonian app Bolt operates exclusive pickup areas at Barcelona Airport — the only ride-hailing platform with official designated zones at BCN. Cabify and Uber also operate in Barcelona but pickup logistics may require meeting drivers outside designated areas. Estimated ride to city centre: €25–35. Download apps in advance and confirm pickup point location upon landing. FreeNow is another taxi-hailing app widely used in Barcelona.
Car Rental
All major car rental companies are represented at BCN. At Terminal 1, rental desks are located on Level 0 (arrivals). At Terminal 2, desks are in the arrivals hall of T2B. Companies include Europcar, Hertz, Avis, Budget, Sixt, Enterprise, and Goldcar. The airport connects directly to the C-32 motorway for fast access to the city and Catalan coast. Note that driving and parking in central Barcelona is expensive and regulated — a rental car is best for trips outside the city.
Hotel Shuttles
Most hotels within 5 km of the airport offer complimentary shuttle services. At T1, hotel shuttle stops are located near Parking G following the covered walkway from arrivals. At T2, shuttles stop between T2B and T2C. Always confirm shuttle schedules with your hotel in advance, especially for late-night arrivals.

The airport has 19 dedicated work zones (14 in T1, 5 in T2) with 40 tables and over 320 power outlets for passengers.
Shopping
Terminal 1's Sky Center (Level 1) houses the main duty-free and retail area. Key offerings include a large Dufry duty-free with spirits, perfumes, cosmetics, and tobacco; luxury brands such as Swarovski, Carolina Herrera, and Tous; a well-stocked Catalonia souvenir shop with local food products, design items, and books; a newsagent/bookshop; and a pharmacy. Terminal 2 has a smaller selection of shops including a duty-free, news stand, and gift shops. Barcelona Airport is a competitive duty-free destination — alcohol, cosmetics, and electronics are particularly good value for non-EU passengers.
Dining
Terminal 1 has the widest choice of food and drink options across all levels. Notable options include:
- Dehesa Santamaría (Sky Center) — Upscale Spanish deli and restaurant
- La Place (Sky Center) — Fresh salads, sandwiches, hot meals

Family Facilities
Both T1 and T2 have dedicated baby care / nursing rooms with changing tables, bottle warmers, and seating. T1 has a children's play area. Family priority lanes are available at security checkpoints — look for "Priority" signage and inform staff. Family-friendly restaurants with children's menus are found in the Sky Center area of T1.
Accessibility (PRM Services)
Barcelona Airport is fully accessible. Assistance for Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM) is coordinated by Aena — book through your airline at least 48 hours in advance. The airport provides electric carts, wheelchair access, dedicated lifts, accessible restrooms, and assistance at all security, passport control, and boarding points. For wheelchair-adapted taxis, call +34 93 420 8088.
Currency Exchange and ATMs
Currency exchange is available through Global Exchange in T1 arrivals (Level 1) and in T2. Hours vary by desk but typically 06:30–22:00. Note that exchange bureau rates are generally poor — using an ATM for local currency is more advantageous. CaixaBank ATMs are located in T1 Level 1 (07:30–22:00) and T2B Level 0 (08:30–14:30 on weekdays). Additional ATMs from various banks are throughout both terminals.
Left Luggage / Luggage Storage

Long-term warehouse storage costs €36 transfer fee plus €1.80/day. If arriving at T2, passengers must take the inter-terminal shuttle to T1 to access left luggage. Alternatively, several third-party luggage storage services are available in Barcelona city centre.
Smoking
Smoking is strictly prohibited inside all airport buildings. Designated outdoor smoking areas are located outside the terminal buildings, accessible from the landside areas. Airside (post-security), there are no smoking areas — plan accordingly for long-haul flights.
Prayer Rooms and Chapel
An inter-denominational chapel and prayer room is available in Terminal 1. Suitable for all faiths. Quiet and clean; accessible to all passengers regardless of ticket class.
Showers
Showers are available to passengers using the VIP lounges (Pau Casals, Joan Miró, Canudas). Walk-in lounge access (from €41.50) includes shower use. The Sleep&Fly Business Centre in T1 also includes shower facilities for day-use room guests. No standalone public pay-showers are available outside of lounge access.

Passenger Statistics
Barcelona Airport Passenger Statistics
Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport has experienced dramatic growth over the past decade, recovering strongly from the COVID-19 pandemic and setting consecutive annual records. In 2025, the airport reached 57.48 million passengers — a new all-time record for the fourth consecutive year — and cementing BCN as Europe's sixth busiest airport and Spain's second. Aircraft movements reached 361,000 operations in 2025 (up from 348,000 in 2024), and cargo volume grew to 200.7 million kg.
| Year | Passengers | Growth | Operations |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 | 52.7 million | +5.0% | ~345,000 |
| 2020 | ~12.7 million | –75.9% | N/A (COVID-19) |
| 2021 | ~22.7 million | +78.6% | N/A |
| 2022 | ~41.6 million | +83.2% | N/A |
| 2023 | 49,909,544 | +19.9% | ~319,000 |
| 2024 | 55,034,955 | +10.3% | 347,977 |
| 2025 | 57,483,036 | +4.4% | 361,000 |
International traffic accounted for 75% of 2025 passengers (43.26 million). The busiest month historically is August, with over 5.4 million passengers in August 2024. The top international connection in 2024 was Italy (~6 million passengers, up 24%), followed by the United Kingdom (~4.8 million) and France (~3.9 million). North America traffic reached 2.6 million in 2024, a 24.8% increase and record level. Asia connections also hit an all-time high of 2.34 million passengers in 2024.
The airport has essentially reached its designed capacity of 55 million passengers per year with the existing infrastructure. Aena is managing growth through off-peak slot utilisation and reducing seasonal fluctuations while the planned expansion — a new terminal and runway extension — remains under political debate as of early 2026.

Pro Tips for Barcelona Airport
- In T1, security queues are fastest in the early morning (before 06:30) and late evening (after 21:00). The main security bottleneck is at the Sky Center on Level 1 — use the Boarding Area C entrance if you're flying the Barcelona–Madrid shuttle, as it has a separate security lane.
- Priority Pass holders: the Sala VIP Pau Casals in T1 is airside (post-security, Schengen zone). If you're on a non-Schengen flight, access the Sala VIP Joan Miró in the international zone near Gate D. Confirm your lounge access type before purchasing walk-in tickets.
- The SLAM by Hermanos Torres restaurant in T2 (Gate U airside) is an unexpected culinary gem — Barcelona star chefs Salvador and Javier Torres run this concept. If you're departing from T2, arrive with time to dine properly rather than grabbing fast food.
- Water refill stations (free) are located in T1 near Gates B22 and D20, and in T2B near Gate 60. Fill your bottle after security to avoid paying €3+ for a bottle at shops.
- Always check which terminal — T1 or T2 — your flight operates from. They are 4 km apart with no airside connection. This is the single most important thing to confirm before heading to the airport.
- Buy your Aerobus ticket online in advance at aerobusbarcelona.es — it's the same price but saves you time at the machine and guarantees your seat during peak hours.
- Pre-book long-stay parking (Larga Estancia) on Aena's website: a 7-day pre-booked rate can be €98 versus €147 walk-up. Savings are significant, especially in summer.
- If connecting from T2 to catch a train (R2 Nord), the station is a 3-minute walk from T2B arrivals — one of the easiest rail connections at any major European airport. T1 passengers must take the inter-terminal shuttle first (add 15 minutes).
- Confusing the L9 Sud metro with a direct city-centre connection. The L9 terminates at Zona Universitària, not Plaça Catalunya — you need to transfer to another metro line to reach the main tourist areas. For most visitors, the Aerobus is simpler and comparable in time.
- Assuming all Barcelona-area airports are the same: BCN (El Prat) is the main international hub 15 km from the city. Girona (GRO) and Reus (REU) are low-cost airports over 90 km away served mainly by Ryanair — a common booking mistake that results in a 1.5-hour bus ride to reach Barcelona.
- Attempting a self-transfer between T1 and T2 with less than 90 minutes. The process requires baggage reclaim, clearing customs, shuttle bus, and re-checking in with security — it is routinely underestimated. Three hours is the safe minimum for a self-connecting transfer between separate tickets.
