King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED)
Airport Overview
King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA), officially named after Abdulaziz ibn Saud, the founder of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is the principal international gateway for the city of Jeddah and the entire western region of the Kingdom. Located approximately 19 kilometres (12 miles) north of Jeddah city centre along King Abdulaziz Road, the airport covers a vast area of 112 square kilometres (43 sq mi), placing it among the largest airports in the world by land area. It was inaugurated on 12 April 1981 by King Khaled and Prince Fahd, replacing the older Jeddah International Airport (Kandara Airport), and opened for commercial service on 31 May 1981.
The airport serves as the primary hub for Saudia (Saudi Arabian Airlines), the Kingdom's national flag carrier and a SkyTeam member, and operates as a base for Saudi low-cost carriers flynas and flyadeal. Its strategic position adjacent to the holy city of Mecca β just 90 kilometres away β makes it the world's foremost gateway for Islamic pilgrimage. Each year, KAIA processes millions of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims from across the globe through its architecturally iconic Hajj Terminal, a structure awarded the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1983.
In 2025, King Abdulaziz International Airport achieved a historic national milestone by surpassing 50 million passengers for the first time in Saudi aviation history, with the official 50-millionth passenger recorded mid-year. Full-year 2025 figures reached 53.4 million passengers β the highest ever recorded by any Saudi airport. This followed a record-breaking 2024, when KAIA served 49.1 million passengers (+14% year-on-year), exceeding 278,000 flights and processing 47.1 million bags. By passenger volume, KAIA ranks as the busiest airport in Saudi Arabia, fourth busiest in the Middle East (after Dubai DXB, Istanbul IST, and Doha DOH), and among the top 40 globally.
Major expansion is underway as part of a SAR 115 billion (approximately $31 billion) development plan. Terminal 2, slated to begin construction in 2026 and complete by 2031, will triple existing capacity. A fourth runway is planned for 2025β2029. The airport's long-term target is 114 million passengers annually, in alignment with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 tourism goals.

Terminals & Gates
Terminal 1 (New Terminal)
Terminal 1 is the centrepiece of King Abdulaziz International Airport and one of the largest airport terminals in the world, covering approximately 810,000 square metres. Soft-launched in 2018 and officially inaugurated by King Salman in September 2019, it replaced the South Terminal (permanently closed June 2020). The terminal is designed to eventually accommodate 80 million passengers per year at full build-out.
Terminal 1 handles the majority of commercial traffic at KAIA β both domestic and international. It is divided into gate sections A through E with more than 46 boarding gates and 120 retail shops. Distinctive features include a 14-metre-tall aquarium (10 metres in diameter β one of the largest in any airport worldwide), an 18,000 mΒ² central garden, a mosque with capacity for 3,732 worshippers, and the integrated Haramain High-Speed Railway station accessible via a 3.75 km branch line.

Hajj & Umrah Terminal (Terminal H)
The Hajj Terminal is one of the world's most architecturally celebrated airport structures. Designed by Bangladeshi-American architect Fazlur Rahman Khan of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, with tent-like roof engineered by Horst Berger of Geiger Berger Associates, it won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1983. The roof comprises Teflon-coated fibreglass modules suspended from pylons, evoking traditional pilgrim tents.
The terminal covers approximately 465,000 square metres across five zones (A, B, J, D, H) with 15 domes connected to aircraft via boarding gates. Capacity is 80,000 passengers simultaneously. During Hajj season, virtually all pilgrimage flights use this terminal. Outside Hajj, it handles Umrah traffic year-round.

Haramain High-Speed Railway Tickets
Pro Tips for King Abdulaziz International Airport
- The Haramain train station is inside Terminal 1's transport hub β follow signs for 'Transport Centre' from the arrivals hall. If you land at the North Terminal, take the free shuttle bus or APM to Terminal 1 first.
- Terminal 1's central garden (18,000 mΒ²) is excellent for resting and letting children move freely during long layovers β a rare and genuinely pleasant feature for a high-volume Middle Eastern hub.
- The 14-metre aquarium near Terminal 1's transport hub is a useful landmark for orientation and worth seeing β one of the largest airport aquariums in the world.
- Terminal 1's grand mosque accommodates over 3,700 worshippers and has ablution facilities β locate it near the transport hub before departing for Mecca or Medina.
- During Hajj season (typically JuneβJuly) and Ramadan, KAIA handles 150,000+ passengers on peak days β book Haramain train tickets to Mecca weeks in advance at sar.hhr.sa, as trains sell out. Airport taxi queues can extend 1β2 hours on peak Hajj days.
- Non-Muslims transiting through Jeddah should be aware that Mecca and Medina are closed to non-Muslims β the Haramain train passes through both cities but non-Muslims cannot disembark there.
- Confirm your terminal before arriving: most major international airlines use Terminal 1, but budget carriers (Air Arabia, Wizz Air, IndiGo, Air India) still use the North Terminal. The inter-terminal shuttle costs SAR 23 and takes 10β15 minutes.
- Saudi Arabia has a strict no-alcohol policy β do not attempt to bring alcohol into the country. Dress modestly when outside the international zones of the airport, especially when transiting toward Mecca or Medina.
- Arriving late during Hajj season β the airport processes 150,000+ passengers on peak days with significantly longer queues at security, check-in, and immigration. Add at least 1 extra hour to your standard pre-flight time during Dhu al-Hijjah.
- Assuming the North Terminal and Terminal 1 share the same facilities β they do not. If you need the Haramain train, you must be in Terminal 1. The shuttle/APM takes 10β15 minutes including wait time.
- Exchanging too much currency at the airport β Al Rajhi Bank and other airport counters carry higher margins than city-centre branches or ATMs. Withdraw only what you need on immediate arrival and exchange the rest in Jeddah city.
