Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG)
Airport Overview
Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport (IATA: CDG, ICAO: LFPG), widely known as Roissy Airport, is the primary international gateway serving Paris, the capital of France. Named after World War II leader and French President Charles de Gaulle — whose initials form its iconic IATA code — the airport was inaugurated on 8 March 1974. It is located in the commune of Roissy-en-France, 23 km (14 miles) northeast of the Paris city centre, spanning three French départements and six communes across 32.38 square kilometres of land.
CDG serves as the principal hub for Air France, the French flag carrier and a SkyTeam founding member, which operates over 180 international destinations from Terminal 2E alone. The airport is also an important operating base for easyJet (Terminal 2D/2B) and Norse Atlantic Airways, and hosts carriers from all three major global alliances — Star Alliance (primarily Terminal 1), SkyTeam (Terminal 2), and Oneworld. In total, 105 airlines operated at CDG as of 2025, making it the second-highest number of airline operators of any airport globally, after Bangkok Suvarnabhumi.
In 2024, the airport handled 70,290,260 passengers and 466,543 aircraft movements — a 2.9% increase over 2023's 68.3 million. This placed CDG as the world's 14th busiest airport overall, Europe's 3rd busiest (after London Heathrow and Istanbul), and the No. 1 airport in the European Union by passenger volume. Cargo performance is equally impressive: CDG processed 1.91 million tonnes of freight in 2024, ranking second in Europe after Frankfurt. The airport's peak month is August, with 6.87 million passengers recorded in August 2024.
CDG was a product of visionary modernist design. Terminal 1, designed by architect Paul Andreu, features a striking circular futurist shape that was revolutionary at its 1974 opening. The airport has undergone continuous expansion, with Terminal 2 (a sprawling 2-kilometre complex of seven sub-terminals) added progressively and the TGV high-speed rail station integrated directly into the Terminal 2 complex. The free automated CDGVAL light-rail shuttle connects all terminals. A landmark CDG Express non-stop train link to Paris Gare de l'Est is scheduled to open in 2027, cutting journey time to 20 minutes. The airport is operated by Groupe ADP (Aéroports de Paris) under the consumer-facing brand Paris Aéroport.

Terminals & Gates
Terminal 1 — The Futurist Octopus
Opened with the airport on 8 March 1974, Terminal 1 was designed by architect Paul Andreu and is a marvel of 1970s Brutalist/Futurist architecture. Its distinctive circular "octopus" design features a central cylindrical building connected to seven satellite boarding buildings via underground pedestrian walkways with moving walkways. The Frutiger typeface — named after its designer Adrian Frutiger — was commissioned specifically for the airport's signage in 1975 and became internationally famous.
Terminal 1 is the primary home of Star Alliance carriers (excluding Air Canada and Ethiopian Airlines, which use Terminal 2) and select Oneworld carriers. Key airlines include United Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss, Air China, Turkish Airlines, ANA, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, SriLankan Airlines, Oman Air, Etihad Airways, Emirates, Icelandair, Eurowings, Aer Lingus, and Kuwait Airways. Air France does not operate from T1.
- Layout: 5 levels; check-in on levels 3–4; departures on level 4; arrivals on level 5; CDGVAL/RER access and shops/restaurants on level 2
- Gates: 7 satellites with boarding gates (satellites 1–7)
- Lounges: Star Alliance Lounge (Priority Pass access, located immediately after passport control before security, open 05:00–21:00); Qatar Airways Premium Lounge (T1, level 11, open 05:00–22:00); various airline-specific lounges in boarding satellites

- CDGVAL access: T1 station is accessed from level 2. Free shuttle runs every ~4 minutes, 04:00–01:00
Terminal 2 — The Air France Hub (7 Sub-Terminals)
Terminal 2 is a sprawling 2-kilometre complex that serves as the primary hub for Air France and its SkyTeam alliance partners. It is divided into seven sub-terminals: 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 2E, 2F, and 2G. Sub-terminals 2A through 2F are interconnected by covered walkways and internal shuttle buses (N1 line). Terminal 2G is a separate satellite building 800 m away, accessible only by free bus shuttle N2.
The TGV/RER station "Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 2 TGV" is embedded within the Terminal 2 complex, between sub-terminals 2C/2E and 2D/2F. The Sheraton Paris Airport Hotel is located directly above this station, making it the most conveniently placed hotel at CDG.
- 2A: Air Canada, Air Algérie, and Oneworld carriers (shared security with 2C)
- 2B: easyJet base, British Airways, Air India, Air Canada (some routes); shared facilities with 2D
- 2C: American Airlines, Kenya Airways, Oneworld partners; shared with 2A
- 2D: easyJet, Ukraine International; shared with 2B
- 2E: Air France's main long-haul non-Schengen hub. Gates K (main hall), L (Satellite S3 — requires LISA transit train), M (Satellite S4 — requires LISA transit train). Delta Air Lines, Air France, and SkyTeam long-haul carriers. YOTELAIR Paris CDG Airport hotel is located airside in Terminal 2E (L gates area — requires a departing T2E boarding pass to access)
- 2F: Air France Schengen flights (within the EU), KLM, Air Europa. Air France Business Lounge (open 05:30–23:30) — one of the best lounges at CDG with split-level design, champagne bar "Le Balcon," Clarins spa, and chefs preparing meals to order
- 2G: Air France domestic and short-haul European routes; Luxair. Only 8 gates; no direct walkway connection — use free shuttle bus N2 from 2F
Lounges in Terminal 2:
- Air France La Première (First Class only; T2E Hall K; 1,000 m², Alain Ducasse cuisine, Sisley spa, butler service)
- Air France Business Lounges (T2E Halls K/L/M and T2F; open to Business Class, Flying Blue Gold/Platinum, SkyTeam Elite Plus)
- American Airlines Admirals Club (T2 connector between 2A–2C; open 06:30–14:00; Oneworld Emerald/Sapphire access)
- Cathay Pacific Lounge (T2AC connector; Oneworld access)

- Extime Lounge (T2B/2D; accessible to select card/pass holders)
Inter-terminal connections: Within T2, free shuttle N1 connects 2AC, 2BD, and 2EF with the TGV-RER station (~5–10 min). The LISA transit train (airside only, post-security) connects T2E Hall K to satellites S3 (L gates) and S4 (M gates). CDGVAL connects T1 ↔ T2 ↔ T3 every ~4 minutes, 04:00–01:00.
Terminal 3 — Low-Cost and Charter Hub
Terminal 3 (historically known as Terminal 9) is a compact, no-frills facility primarily serving low-cost carriers and charter airlines. It is located approximately 1 km from Terminal 1 and 3 km walking distance (but just 300 m to the Aéroport CDG 1 RER/CDGVAL station). There are no permanent boarding gates; all passengers board via bus to remote aircraft stands. Voted the 2024 Best Low-Cost Airlines Terminal in the World by Skytrax.
- Airlines: Vueling, Iberia (some routes), Air Transat, SunExpress, Norse Atlantic Airways, various charter operators
- Facilities: Basic check-in, security, a small selection of shops and cafés, baggage reclaim. No lounges.
- Access: 5–10 minute walk from the Aéroport CDG 1 RER B station; CDGVAL stops at T3 station. Connecting passengers from T1 or T2 use the CDGVAL shuttle.
Transportation Guide
Getting from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport to Paris City Centre
CDG is 23 km northeast of central Paris and offers an excellent variety of transport options. Travel times vary significantly depending on traffic and time of day. Below is a detailed breakdown of all major options.
RER B Train — The Recommended Option
The RER B regional express train is the fastest, most affordable, and most reliable way to reach central Paris from CDG. Two stations serve the airport: Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 1 (serving Terminals 1 and 3, accessed via the CDGVAL shuttle from T1, or a short walk from T3) and Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 2 TGV (inside the Terminal 2 complex, directly accessible from 2E/2F).
- Journey time: ~25–35 minutes to Gare du Nord; ~37 minutes to Châtelet–Les Halles; ~40 minutes to Saint-Michel–Notre-Dame
- Frequency: Every 10–15 minutes (4 trains/hour); first train ~04:50, last train ~23:50
- Ticket price (2025): €11.80 for adults, €8.20 for children aged 4–9 (under 4 free) — the "Ticket Métro Train Aéroport CDG". Must be loaded onto a Navigo Easy card (€2 card fee if not already owned) or mobile phone/Apple Wallet
- Key stops: Gare du Nord (major interchange for Eurostar and Metro lines 4/5), Châtelet–Les Halles (central Paris mega-hub), Saint-Michel–Notre-Dame (Latin Quarter)
- Important note: Only RER B3 trains go to the airport — confirm the final destination is "Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 2 TGV" before boarding. RER B5 terminates at Mitry-Claye and does NOT serve the airport. Thieves work on this route — keep bags secure.
TGV / High-Speed Train
The TGV station at Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 2 (CDG2-TGV) connects directly to France's national high-speed rail network, offering services across France and into Belgium and the Netherlands via Thalys/Eurostar. This is ideal for passengers connecting CDG with destinations like Lyon, Marseille, Lille, and Brussels without entering Paris. Trains depart from within the Terminal 2 complex. Tickets via SNCF Connect at variable prices.
Roissybus — Direct Coach to Opéra
The Roissybus is a dedicated airport express coach running directly from CDG to the Opéra Garnier (9th arrondissement, Rue Scribe). It offers comfortable seating with dedicated luggage space — ideal for those staying near the Opera/Grands Boulevards area.
- Journey time: 60–75 minutes (traffic dependent, can be longer during rush hour)
- Frequency: Every 15–20 minutes, 06:00–23:00 from CDG; 05:15–00:30 from Opéra
- Ticket price: €16.60 per person (2025 rate); tickets available at vending machines in terminals and via the Île-de-France Mobilités app
Le Bus Direct (formerly Cars Air France)
Le Bus Direct operates four comfortable coach lines from CDG with multiple stops across central and western Paris:
- Line 2: CDG → Étoile (Arc de Triomphe) / Trocadéro — ~70–90 minutes; €18 one-way, €31 return (adults)
- Line 4: CDG → Gare Montparnasse / Gare de Lyon — ~60–90 minutes; same pricing
- Frequency: Every 30 minutes; operates ~06:00–23:00. Comfortable reclining seats, WiFi on some services
- Tickets available at: www.lebusdirect.com, on board (card only), or airport ticket booths
Taxi — Official Fixed-Rate Service
Since 2016, Paris airport taxi fares are regulated by prefectural decree. Official taxis (marked "Taxi Parisien" with a rooftop light) offer flat rates:
- Right Bank (Rive Droite) — all 1st–12th arrondissements, including the Marais, Champs-Élysées, Opéra: €56
- Left Bank (Rive Gauche) — all 13th–20th arrondissements, including Saint-Germain, Montparnasse, Bastille: €65
- Journey time: 40–60 minutes (can be 75+ minutes during peak hours)
- Surcharges: +€4 for 5th passenger; advance G7 booking fee: €4 (immediate) or €7 (advance reservation). No extra charge for luggage or up to 4 passengers.
- Taxi stands: Outside baggage claim of each terminal. Always use the official queue — do not accept approaches from individuals offering rides.
- G7 app: France's largest taxi fleet. Book via the G7 app or +33 1 47 39 47 39. Recommended for advance bookings.
Ride-Sharing (Uber, Bolt, Free Now)
Uber, Bolt, and Free Now (formerly Kapten) all operate at CDG. Pick-up points are in designated ride-share zones (separate from taxi ranks — follow airport signs). Prices are dynamic and subject to surge pricing, but can range from €45–€70 to central Paris under normal conditions. During peak events or adverse weather, surge pricing can push fares significantly higher than taxi flat rates. Always check the app estimate before confirming.
Car Rental
All major rental companies are represented at CDG, including Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, National, Sixt, and Thrifty. Desks are located in the arrivals areas of each terminal, with vehicles available in on-site or nearby lots. Advance booking strongly recommended during peak periods. Access via the A1, A3, and A104 motorways.
Hotel Shuttles
On-site hotels (Pullman/Sheraton/Novotel/ibis cluster) operate complimentary frequent shuttles to all terminals, separate from the CDGVAL. Off-site hotels in the Roissy-Villepinte area typically offer paid shuttle services or connect via CDGVAL and RER B. Confirm shuttle schedule with your hotel when booking.

Lounges — Summary
CDG has an extensive array of airline lounges but relatively limited independent Priority Pass options. The main Priority Pass-accessible lounge is the Star Alliance Lounge in Terminal 1 (before security, after passport control). In Terminal 2E, the YOTELAIR lounge accepts Priority Pass but provides only vending-machine snacks and a €10 credit — widely considered one of Europe's weakest Priority Pass options. The real premium lounge experience at CDG is through airline status: the Air France La Première (T2E, First Class only; Alain Ducasse cuisine, Sisley spa) and Air France Business Lounges (T2E and T2F) are among the best in Europe. The American Airlines Admirals Club (T2, 2AC connector) and Cathay Pacific Lounge offer quality Oneworld options. The Qatar Airways Premium Lounge in T1 is also excellent and highly rated by Oneworld passengers.
Shopping
CDG offers exceptional duty-free shopping, particularly in Terminal 2E (the main luxury retail zone). The Extime duty-free shops carry a broad range of French luxury brands: Hermès, Cartier, Chanel, Dior, Saint Laurent, Moncler, Rolex, Prada, and Boss. Buy Paris Duty Free is the main duty-free operator. Terminal 2 is the principal shopping destination, with brands curated to reflect Paris's reputation as the world capital of fashion and luxury. Terminal 1 has a more limited but solid retail selection. Terminal 3 has only basic shops. Parisien food and wine selections (champagne, Bordeaux, macarons, foie gras) are widely available for take-home purchases.
Dining
CDG offers extensive dining across all terminals. Terminal 2E has the best selection, including sit-down restaurants with French cuisine, brasseries, sushi, and fast food. Notable options include Ladurée (macarons and pastries, T2E), Paul Boulangerie (across multiple terminals), and a variety of French bistros and brasseries. Price range: sandwiches and coffee from €8–€15; sit-down meals €20–€45. 24-hour options are limited outside terminal operating hours; vending machines are available overnight. Terminal 1 has Pret A Manger (popular for quick, fresh meals) and several café chains.
Medical & Pharmacy
Pharmacies are located in each main terminal (check arrival level or departure levels). A medical centre is available at the airport, typically accessible from the public areas. For serious emergencies, contact airport security or call 112 (European emergency number).
Families & Children
Play areas for children are available in Terminals 1 and 2 (check terminal maps for exact locations). Baby care rooms with changing tables are located throughout all terminals — follow the family/baby signage. Family lanes are available at security checkpoints — look for "famille" markings. Unaccompanied minor services (ages 4–17) are available through individual airlines; must be arranged at booking.
Accessibility (PRM Services)
CDG provides comprehensive services for Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PRM). The Sunflower Lanyard programme is available for passengers with invisible disabilities (autism, anxiety, dementia, etc.) — request at information desks or assistance points. Assistance must be requested from your airline at least 48 hours before departure. Wheelchair assistance, accessible toilets, and wide walkways are available throughout. 50% parking discount for disabled pass holders in all official lots.
Currency Exchange & ATMs
Currency exchange offices (bureaux de change) operate in arrivals and departure areas of all terminals. Rates are typically less favourable than city rates; using your bank card at ATMs (widely available throughout CDG) is generally more economical. Major international banks and Euronet ATMs are in each terminal. Note that ATM machines in arrivals can have long queues at peak times.
Luggage Storage
Left-luggage / baggage storage services are available in Terminal 2, near the TGV–RER station. Bags can be stored for a few hours up to 90 days. Prices vary by bag size. Additional left-luggage options are available via private services in the terminal area. Security screening of stored luggage is performed. Contact the Paris Aéroport information desks for current storage rates.
Smoking
Smoking is prohibited inside all terminal buildings. Designated outdoor smoking areas are provided close to boarding gates (airside) in certain terminals. Smoking outside the terminal entrances is also restricted to marked zones.
Prayer Rooms & Chapel
Multi-faith prayer rooms are available in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Follow signage for "Salle de Prière / Prayer Room." A non-denominational chapel is available in the Terminal 1 area.
Showers
Shower facilities are available in the major airline lounges (Air France Business/La Première, Star Alliance Lounge in T1, Admirals Club in T2AC). Passengers without lounge access can use the YOTELAIR hotel facilities in T2E (available on day use with cabin booking). Limited public shower availability — the best option is purchasing day access to a lounge or booking a YOTELAIR cabin.

Key Performance Figures (2024)
In 2024, CDG handled 70,290,260 passengers and 466,543 aircraft movements. The airport processed 1,914,681 tonnes of cargo, making it the second-busiest freight hub in Europe after Frankfurt. CDG ranked 14th globally by passenger numbers (per Wikipedia, sourced from ACI), 3rd in Europe (after London Heathrow and Istanbul Ataturk), and 1st in the European Union — a position reclaimed in 2024 boosted partly by the Paris Olympic Games in summer 2024. The busiest single month was August 2024, with 6,868,032 passengers. The airport operates across 32.38 km² and serves over 300 destinations in 119 countries with 105 airlines. The 2023 recovery represented the first year CDG exceeded 68 million passengers since pre-pandemic 2019 levels, and the 2024 figure of 70.3M approaches but has not yet surpassed the all-time record of 76.1M set in 2019.
Growth Outlook
CDG is targeting further growth ahead of the opening of the CDG Express non-stop rail link to Paris in 2027, which is expected to significantly improve passenger accessibility and reduce road congestion. Groupe ADP's 2025 Pioneers Plan continues investments in terminal modernisation, new baggage handling systems, sustainability, and air-rail intermodality.

Pro Tips for Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport
- Terminal 2E Hall L's YOTELAIR Priority Pass lounge is widely regarded as one of the worst in Europe — just vending machine snacks and a €10 credit. Skip it unless you have nothing else. If flying from T1, the Star Alliance Business Lounge (before security, post-passport control) is genuinely good and worth the Priority Pass visit.
- The CDGVAL free automated shuttle runs every 4 minutes between all terminals and the RER station from 04:00–01:00. It is always the fastest way to get around the airport — avoid wasting time walking the 3 km between T1 and T3.
- On the RER B to Paris: always check the destination board before boarding — only RER B3 trains serve the airport. B5 trains terminate at Mitry-Claye and will take you in entirely the wrong direction. When heading back to CDG from Paris, make sure the train is going to 'Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 2 TGV' and not Mitry.
- For Ladurée macarons or Hermès perfumes at duty-free prices, Terminal 2E (after security) has the best luxury retail in the airport. If you want the full Parisian luxury shopping experience, allow an extra 30–45 minutes after security in T2E.
- Verify your terminal before leaving for the airport — CDG has 3 main terminals and Terminal 2 has 7 sub-terminals (2A–2G). Turning up at Terminal 1 when your Air France flight departs from Terminal 2E can mean a 30-minute CDGVAL detour. Check your boarding pass carefully.
- Buy your RER B train ticket (CDG Airport Ticket, €11.80) online via the Île-de-France Mobilités app or at ticket machines before reaching the gate — airport vending machines can have queues, and American Express cards do NOT work in French transit ticket machines.
- Pre-book parking online at extime.com for up to 50% off walk-up rates. Economy lots PR and PX are the best value for multi-day trips (~€21/day online) and connect to all terminals via the free CDGVAL shuttle.
- If connecting via CDG on a long international journey and your gate is in Terminal 2E's satellite S3 (L gates) or S4 (M gates), add at least 20–30 extra minutes to your connection time — reaching these satellites requires an additional airside LISA transit train ride after passing security.
- Confusing which RER B train to board: about half of all RER B trains go to Mitry-Claye (NOT the airport) — always confirm 'Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 2 TGV' is displayed as the destination before boarding, both from the airport and from Paris.
- Accepting taxi offers from unofficial drivers who approach passengers in arrivals halls. These 'clandestine' taxis operate without meters or regulated fares and regularly charge outrageous amounts. Always walk to the official taxi rank outside baggage claim — official taxis are marked 'Taxi Parisien' with a rooftop light and the fare posted on the left rear window.
- Assuming that Terminal 2 is one building — many travellers booked to, say, Terminal 2C end up confused at the Terminal 2E entrance. The seven sub-terminals (2A through 2G) are spread across a 2-kilometre complex. If in doubt, follow CDGVAL signs and ask at information desks.
